Faculty Spotlight

Dr. Thomas Metcalf, Associate Professor
Dr. Thomas Metcalf is Director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program and an associate professor at Spring Hill College. Dr. Metcalf completed his master’s and doctoral degrees in philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His published work includes articles in philosophy of science, philosophy of religion, metaethics, social-and-political philosophy, and philosophy of education.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Metcalf serves as Faculty Director of Assessment and Institutional Research. He also serves as co-editor and frequent contributor to the online open education-resource, 1000-Word Philosophy. His recently published articles include a defense of philosophy courses as general-education requirements, an examination of the philosophical implications of the existence of laws of nature, and a proposal for a policy to reduce gun violence in a way compatible with the Second Amendment. He regularly presents at colloquia for the American Philosophical Association and serves as president of the Alabama Philosophical Society. At Spring Hill College, he chairs the Curriculum Committee, the Curricular Processes Committee, and the CX Power Users’ Group.
